Whilst other parts of Africa might be known for their scenic qualities, the Chobe National Park in Botswana is known for its wildlife, especially the elephants.  Up to 100,000 elephants are known to take refuge from poachers in the enormous park, the oldest in Botswana.  Elephants appear to exhibit what we know as memory.  They know that their lives are endangered in neighbouring countries.  They even seem to know exactly where the borders are and where they are safe.  So elephants flock here from all over southern Africa.  This gives us the opportunity to observe large herds of the enormous beasts.  Here, we were in a boat and happened upon a breeding herd as they were crossing the Chobe River from the Chobe National Park in Botswana to an island in the river where they will graze on the lush aquatic greens.  This is a luxury for the older elephants who must preserve their teeth or die.  They get six sets of teeth in a lifetime but hard grass and sand in roots abrade them.  So on an Experiential Safari you will often see Elephants plucking grasses from the river's edge and theshing it in the water to remove the sand from the roots.  The aquatic grasses are not as nourishing as the plains grasses so the elderly elephants need to eat more of it to survive.
