The name on the sign rang a bell with me when I saw this display at the Livingstone Museum, the oldest and largest museum in Zambia It transpires that I have a family connection to this famous name. Elie Susman and his brother Harry drove a cart of trading goods north across the Zambesi in 1901 and went on to create one of the largest trading empires in Southern Africa. In 1934 they took a large stake in a business that became Woolworths with Elie taking a more or full time role in that business after it listed as a Public company in 1935. In the meantime Harry kept building the Susman Brothers empire, acquiring Ngamiland Trading Company from my late brother-in-law’s father, Alf “Chobo” Weskob. Chobo stayed on as Managing Director of that business and under his leadership acquired Riley’s an icon of Maun. (at Livingstone Museum)

Canang Sari. Every morning this lovely Hindu lady would place offerings at various little shrines around our lodge in #ubud #bali. A yellow flower towards the west is an offering to Mahadeva, the Balinese form of Shiva, the Destroyer and Transformer or the godly version of Entropy. #neverstopexploring #experientialtravel (at Ubud,Bali)
